About
Local Vocals
Local Vocals is a adult pop up choir that runs in 6-8 week sessions. We learn an eclectic mix of unison, 2- and 3-part music ranging from jazz and pop to music theatre, folk and even classical. Our main reason for being is to build community through song. In other words - have fun together! We contribute to community causes, and perform for local organizations and events.
The Local Vocals began in 2017 as a fundraising initiative for the parents and supporters of Mimico Children's Choir. Led by professional musician, Mary Bella, the first 6-week session had over 45 women from Mimico and beyond! The choir ran successfully as a pop-up group, running 8 sessions over 3 years, with both new and repeat members for every session. We performed in concert with Mimico Children's Choir, and also contributed our talents to local events like Mimico Party in the Park, sang for seniors at facilities like Lakeshore Lodge, and presented our own casual community performances like our Vintage Cabaret evening.
Recently, after a prolonged "Covid hiatus", Mary decided to relaunch the Local Vocals under her own management. She is very excited to start the first post-pandemic session in March 2024, with Linda Roland at the piano! As always, there will be a variety music styles ranging from music theatre, to jazz, folk and pop, with a mix of songs we have done before and a couple of fresh tunes mixed in!
There are expenses involved, including liability insurance, church rental, accompanist, music scores and promotion. As such, without an umbrella organization to support the choir, the sessional fee is slightly higher than it was. In our spirit of community building, we want to include everyone who wishes to participate, regardless of means. We encourage those who are able to contribute something over and above their fee to support another member who might not otherwise be able to afford them.
